Sea Doo Maintenance Checklist: How to Prepare Your PWC for Summer in Ontario

Sea Doo Maintenance Checklist: How to Prepare Your PWC for Summer in Ontario

After a long Ontario winter, the return of Sea Doo season comes fast. The first warm weekends in late May usually mean packed launches, busy marinas, and riders eager to get back on the water. Before you hook up the trailer and head to the lake, it is worth taking the time to properly inspect and prepare your Sea Doo for the season ahead.

Every year we see riders deal with preventable issues during their first ride. Weak batteries, damaged wear rings, old fuel, and neglected maintenance items can quickly turn a great weekend into an expensive repair. A proper preseason inspection helps your Sea Doo run the way BRP intended while reducing the chances of unexpected breakdowns during one of the busiest parts of summer.

Whether you ride a Sea Doo Spark, GTI, GTX, RXT X, FishPro, or Wake Pro, the same core maintenance principles apply. This guide covers the most important areas to inspect before your first ride this season along with the OEM Sea Doo parts and maintenance products commonly replaced at the start of the season.

At Energy Powersports, we help Sea Doo owners across Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, Toronto, Hamilton, and the rest of Canada find the correct OEM maintenance parts for their exact model.

Start with a Full Visual Inspection

Before starting the engine or connecting a battery charger, walk around the entire watercraft and inspect it carefully. Storage conditions over winter can create issues that are easy to miss if you rush straight to the launch.

Look for signs of:

  • cracked hoses
  • rodent damage
  • corrosion
  • loose clamps
  • water intrusion
  • oil leaks
  • damaged wiring
  • worn fuel lines

Take off the seat and inspect the engine compartment for moisture or fuel odors. If anything smells unusual or looks out of place, it is best to investigate before running the machine.

This is also a good time to double check the hull for scratches or impact damage from the previous season.

Test the Battery Before Your First Ride

NOCO Genius GEN5X3

Battery problems are one of the most common early season Sea Doo issues in Ontario thanks to our cold winters. Even if your battery was working perfectly in the fall, months of storage and temperature fluctuations can reduce performance significantly.

If your battery was left connected over winter without a maintainer, it may already be partially discharged or permanently weakened.

Before your first ride:

  • fully charge the battery
  • inspect the terminals for corrosion
  • confirm all connections are tight
  • test voltage after charging

Many riders replace the battery every few seasons proactively rather than risk issues at the launch. If your battery struggles to hold voltage or cranks slowly, replacement is usually the safest option before peak riding season begins. You can find Sea Doo batteries and charging accessories on the Energy Powersports online store in This Collection

Inspect the Impeller and Wear Ring

Sea-Doo high performance impeller for GTX 230, GTX Ltd 230 & Wake Pro 230, designed for optimal engine performance.

Your impeller and wear ring play a massive role in Sea Doo performance. Damage in this area can reduce acceleration, top speed, fuel efficiency, and overall ride quality. Small rocks, debris, and accidental shallow water operation can damage the impeller blades or wear ring without the rider realizing it immediately.

Signs of impeller or wear ring issues include:

  • cavitation during acceleration
  • unusually high RPM
  • vibration
  • reduced top speed

Inspect the intake grate area carefully with a flashlight. The impeller blades should appear smooth and consistent without major chips or bends. The wear ring clearance should also remain tight and uniform. Even relatively minor wear can noticeably affect performance on your Sea-Doo. OEM Sea Doo wear rings and impellers are available at the Energy Powersports online store in the following collections:

Change Your XPS Oil and Oil Filter

Fresh oil is critical for protecting your Sea Doo engine during the summer riding season. If you did not complete an oil change before winterization, spring is the perfect time to do it. BRP recommends XPS oil because it is specifically designed for the operating temperatures and demands of the Rotax marine engines found in Sea-Doos.

Using the correct oil helps:

  • reduce internal wear
  • maintain lubrication under load
  • improve reliability
  • protect against corrosion
  • support long engine life

When changing oil, it is also important to replace the oil filter with an OEM filter designed for your specific engine platform. Selecting the correct oil change kit for your Sea-Doo is super easy.

If you own a Sea-Doo spark you should purchase this kit:

Inspect and Replace Spark Plugs if Needed

Spark plugs are another commonly overlooked maintenance item. Worn plugs can lead to:

  • hard starting
  • rough idle
  • reduced fuel efficiency
  • hesitation under acceleration

On high performance Sea Doo models, spark plug condition becomes even more important because of the increased cylinder pressures and operating temperatures. If your Sea Doo has high hours or if the plugs were not replaced recently, installing fresh OEM spark plugs before the season starts is inexpensive insurance.

You can find Spark Plugs for your Sea-Doo in this collection:

Sea-Doo Batteries and Spark Plugs

When replacing spark plugs:

  • confirm the correct plug type for your model
  • inspect ignition coils for corrosion
  • check for moisture around the plug wells
  • Always avoid overtightening plugs during installation

Ontario riders often launch early in the season when water temperatures are still very cold. Any cooling system issue can quickly create reliability problems once summer temperatures rise and riding becomes more aggressive.

Inspect:

  • cooling hoses
  • hose clamps
  • flush fittings
  • intercooler connections
  • signs of salt or mineral buildup

If anything appears brittle, cracked, or swollen, replacement should happen before the machine sees heavy use. It is also smart to perform a flush if the Sea Doo was previously operated in dirty or mineral rich water.

Inspect Your Trailer Before Heading to the Launch

Many preseason problems are trailer related rather than Sea Doo related.

Before your first trip:

  • inspect tire pressure
  • test trailer lights
  • grease wheel bearings
  • inspect straps and winch condition
  • confirm the trailer wiring works properly

A failed trailer bearing on the highway can ruin a riding weekend quickly.

Do Not Ignore Fuel Quality

Fuel left sitting for months can degrade significantly, especially if stabilizer was not added before storage. If the fuel smells stale or if the machine sat for an extended period with untreated fuel, it may be safer to dilute the old fuel with fresh premium fuel or fully replace it.

Poor fuel quality can contribute to:

  • rough idle
  • injector issues
  • poor acceleration
  • hard starting

Fuel quality becomes especially important on higher performance Sea Doo models.

Why OEM Sea Doo Maintenance Parts Matter

Sea Doo watercraft are engineered with tight tolerances and high performance expectations. Using OEM BRP maintenance components helps ensure compatibility and long term reliability.

This becomes especially important for:

  • oil filters
  • wear rings
  • impellers
  • spark plugs
  • seals
  • cooling system components

Aftermarket parts can sometimes create fitment or durability issues, particularly on newer Sea Doo platforms. At Energy Powersports, we help riders identify the correct OEM maintenance parts for their exact Sea Doo model and year so they can ride confidently throughout the Ontario summer season.

Preparing for a Full Ontario Riding Season

Ontario riding conditions can vary dramatically throughout the summer. Riders may encounter:

  • cold spring launches
  • rough water
  • long distance touring
  • heavy weekend traffic
  • shallow cottage shorelines

A properly maintained Sea Doo is far more likely to deliver a reliable and enjoyable season with fewer interruptions. Completing preseason maintenance also helps avoid mid summer repair delays when parts demand is highest across Canada.

Sea-Doo Maintenance Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where can I buy OEM Sea Doo maintenance parts in Ontario?

Ontario riders can shop for OEM Sea Doo parts, XPS oil, maintenance kits, spark plugs, batteries, and wear rings through Energy Powersports Online Store with shipping available across Canada. https://shop.energypowersports.ca

  • What maintenance should be done after winter storage?

After winter storage, riders should inspect the battery, fuel system, oil condition, cooling system, impeller, wear ring, spark plugs, and trailer condition before launching the Sea Doo for the first ride of the season.

  • Can I use aftermarket parts on my Sea Doo?

Some aftermarket parts may work well, but OEM Sea Doo parts are designed specifically for BRP fitment and performance standards. OEM maintenance parts are generally recommended for reliability, compatibility, and long term durability.

  • Should I replace spark plugs before every riding season?

Spark plugs do not always need yearly replacement, but they should be inspected regularly. Many riders replace them before the season begins as preventative maintenance, especially on high performance or supercharged Sea Doo models.

  • What type of oil should I use in my Sea Doo?

BRP recommends XPS oil for Sea Doo watercraft because it is designed specifically for Rotax marine engines. Different Sea Doo models may require different oil types depending on the engine platform and whether the unit is supercharged.

  • How do I know if my Sea Doo battery needs replacement?

Common signs of a weak Sea Doo battery include slow cranking, difficulty starting, low voltage after charging, or electronic systems behaving inconsistently. Ontario winters can shorten battery life significantly if the battery is not properly maintained during storage.

  • How often should a Sea Doo wear ring be replaced?

Wear ring lifespan depends on riding conditions and water conditions. Riders who frequently operate in shallow water or near rocky shorelines may need replacement sooner. If performance drops or cavitation develops, the wear ring should be inspected immediately.

  • Should I change the oil in my Sea Doo every season?

Most Sea Doo owners should change the oil and oil filter at least once per season or according to BRP maintenance intervals. Fresh XPS oil helps protect the Rotax engine from wear, heat, and corrosion during heavy summer use.

  • What causes cavitation on a Sea Doo?

Cavitation is commonly caused by a damaged impeller or worn wear ring. Riders may notice high RPM with poor acceleration, vibration, or reduced top speed. Rocks, debris, and shallow water operation are common causes of wear ring and impeller damage in Ontario lakes.

  • I live in a remote area, can OEM BRP parts be shipped across Ontario?

Yes. OEM BRP parts can be shipped throughout Ontario and across Canada anywhere that one of our carriers can reach you.

  • How do I prepare my Sea Doo for the first ride of the season in Ontario?

Before your first ride, inspect the battery, check the impeller and wear ring, change the XPS oil and oil filter if needed, inspect spark plugs, verify cooling system hoses, and confirm there are no fuel or fluid leaks. A proper preseason inspection helps reduce the chances of breakdowns during Ontario’s short riding season.
