
A Mercury outboard model name is a compressed spec sheet. Every letter and number after the horsepower figure tells you the start type, shaft length, steering, trim, controls, and sometimes the engine configuration — all packed into a string like 25ELPT or 9.9EXLPT CT. Once you know the key, you can look at any Mercury nameplate and immediately know whether it fits your boat.
Breaking Down a Real Mercury Model Number
Take the 2026 Mercury 9.9ELHPT Command Thrust ProKicker EFI FourStroke as an example. Reading left to right: 9.9 is the horsepower, E means electric start, L means a 20-inch shaft, H means it has a tiller handle, and PT means power trim. "Command Thrust," "ProKicker," "EFI," and "FourStroke" are Mercury-specific descriptors layered on top of the core code, identifying the larger-diameter gearcase, kicker-motor role, fuel delivery, and engine cycle.
Start Type: M vs. E
- M — Manual Start: pull-cord start, no battery required. Common on portable motors under 10 hp.
- E — Electric Start: push-button start off an onboard battery. Standard on most mid-size and larger outboards.

Shaft Length: L, XL, XXL, XXXL
Shaft length has to match your boat's transom height, or the propeller sits too high or too low in the water. Mercury uses letter codes rather than spelling out the measurement:
- L — 20" shaft (standard/short shaft)
- XL — 25" shaft (long shaft)
- XXL — 30" shaft (extra-long shaft)
- XXXL — 35" shaft (extra-extra-long shaft, typically larger offshore-oriented models)
For example, the 2026 Mercury 5MXLH FourStroke carries the XL code, meaning it's built for a 25-inch transom rather than the more common 20-inch.
Controls: Tiller vs. Remote
- H — Tiller Handle: the motor is steered directly by hand from a handle on the motor itself.
- RC — Remote Control: the motor is run from a separate helm station with a steering wheel and throttle/shift controls.
Separately, Mercury also groups control setups under three broader categories: TH (tiller), RM (remote mechanical — cable-actuated throttle and shift), and DTS (Digital Throttle and Shift — electronic, cable-free control found on higher-horsepower and larger console boats).
Trim, Tilt, and Steering Codes
These codes describe how the motor raises, lowers, and turns:
- MA — Manual: trim and tilt adjusted by hand.
- PT — Power Tilt: tilt is motorized.
- GA — Gas Assist: a gas-charged strut helps lift the motor for tilt.
- PTT — Power Trim and Tilt: both trim and tilt are fully motorized, letting you adjust the running angle from the helm while underway.
- EHS — Electro-Hydraulic Steering: hydraulic steering assist driven electrically, common on larger and multi-engine setups.
- ES — Electric Steering: fully electric power steering, no hydraulic fluid involved.
Trim vs. Tilt: What's the Difference?
Trim adjusts the angle of the motor in small increments while the boat is running, changing how the bow sits in the water to optimize speed, fuel economy, and handling. Tilt raises the motor's full range up and out of the water, used when docking, trailering, or running in shallow water — it's not something you adjust on the fly while underway.
In practice: trim is a running adjustment measured in a few degrees, while tilt is an all-the-way-up, all-the-way-down motion. That's why Mercury's codes treat them separately — a motor can have power trim without power tilt, manual tilt with power trim, or both combined under PTT.
Fuel Tank Codes
- INT — Integral: the fuel tank is built into the motor itself, common on small portables.
- 3.2G — 12 Liter / 3.2 Gallon external tank
- 6.6G — 25 Liter / 6.6 Gallon external tank
Engine Type Codes
Mercury also documents its engine architecture with a cylinder-count and induction code, most often seen in spec sheets rather than the nameplate itself:
- I1 NA 4S — 1-cylinder, naturally aspirated, four-stroke
- I2 NA 4S — 2-cylinder, naturally aspirated, four-stroke
- I3 NA 4S — 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated, four-stroke
- I4 NA 4S — 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated, four-stroke
- V6 NA 4S — 6-cylinder V-configuration, naturally aspirated, four-stroke
- V8 NA 4S — 8-cylinder V-configuration, naturally aspirated, four-stroke
- V10 NA 4S — 10-cylinder V-configuration, naturally aspirated, four-stroke
- V12 NA 4S — 12-cylinder V-configuration, naturally aspirated, four-stroke
Other Common Codes on the Nameplate
- C — Counter Rotation: the propeller spins in the opposite direction, used for twin-engine setups where one motor counters the torque of the other.
- GA — Gas Assist (also appears here on some tilt/trim systems, as noted above)
- A — Alternator: indicates the motor includes a charging alternator for battery/electronics support.
Putting It All Together: More Real Examples
The 2026 Mercury 20ELHPT FourStroke decodes as: 20 horsepower, electric start (E), 20-inch shaft (L), tiller handle (H), power trim (PT). The 2026 Mercury ME 3.5 MLH FourStroke decodes as: 3.5 horsepower, manual start (M), 20-inch shaft (L), tiller handle (H) — a fully manual, portable setup with no electric or power-assisted components at all.
